The metal is heated above its recrystallization temperature maintained at this temperature and then cooled in a controlled environment. I usually use a bernzomatic mapp gas torc h and heat the entire copper gasket until its cherry red then quickly dump it in a bucket of cold water to quench it. When you anneal copper it expands and becomes soft and pliable thus giving you a seal once the copper has been compressed. Annealing copper makes it softer and less brittle which allows you to bend it without breaking it. You can anneal any grade and thickness of copper as long as you have a flame that can transmit enough heat to the metal.
